Why you should start a passion project (Especially If You Crave Creativity)
Have you ever felt that quiet tug inside?
The one that whispers, “There’s something more I want to create, something just for me.”
That is your creativity calling. Listening to it might just be the beginning of your next passion project.
A passion project is something you do not because you have to, but because it lights you up. It’s a space where your imagination can stretch, your heart can speak and your soul can breathe.
Whether you’re an introvert who finds energy in quiet moments or an extrovert who thrives in connection, your passion project is a reflection of you.
Here are three reasons why you should answer that call.
1. It Awakening Your Creativity
There’s something magical about creating for the joy of it.
When I started taking photographs on my beach walks in Cape Town or painting in my journal, I wasn’t doing it for anyone else. I was doing it because it made me feel alive.
Creativity begets creativity. It opens doors inside you that you didn’t even know were there.
Here are a few ways to begin:
- Go for a walk: Take your camera or phone with you.
- Notice the details: Look for the colours, the textures and the sounds you usually miss.
- Journal it: Write down what you see, hear and feel.
- Get messy: Doodle, paint, or collage your impressions.
- Trust: Let your senses guide you.
You don’t need a plan. Just a little curiosity and a willingness to explore.
2. It Creates Balance Within
When you give yourself time to create, you’re also giving yourself time to breathe.
Passion projects help us step outside the rush of daily life. They remind us that we are more than our to-do lists. They teach us new skills, build confidence and gently shift our perspective.
I often remind myself:
Everything in life is neutral it’s how I think about it that gives it meaning.
When I’m creating, I find it easier to let go of the little things that don’t matter. It creates a buffer of peace around my day.
3. It Makes You Come Alive
There’s a quiet joy in finishing something you’ve poured your heart into.
Whether it’s a handmade journal, a photo book for a friend, or a blog post you’ve been meaning to write it’s the doing that fills you up.
When you finish, you feel it: that deep, inner “yes.” That sense of “I did this.” That is the kind of confidence that carries you into your next creative adventure.
Your passion project doesn’t need to be big or perfect. It just needs to be yours.
Ready to Begin?
If you’re feeling the nudge to start something today follow it. You already know what to do.
Once you begin, something inside you shifts. The world begins to feel a little more vibrant, a little more you.
Journaling Prompts to Spark Your Idea
Here are a few gentle questions to help you get started:
- What’s something I’ve always wanted to create, just for me?
- What brings me joy, even in small moments?
- What would I love to explore if there were no rules or expectations?
- What’s one small step I can take today?
Your Journaling Prompt for the Week:
“What does my creativity want to say today?”
Let your pen wander. Let your heart speak. And remember, your passion project doesn’t have to change the world it just has to change you.
Happy Journaling, Debbera
