Letters That Transform

Letters That Transform

Hearing God Through the Person You Are Becoming

You pick up a journal from two years ago. You read a letter you wrote to God in the middle of a particular pain, a particular season, a particular moment of desperation. You almost do not recognise the person who wrote it.

Not because your handwriting is different. But because you are different.

You read the fear that consumed you and you realise it no longer has that power. You read the question that kept you awake at night and you realise you know the answer now, not because someone gave it to you, because you have lived your way into understanding. You read the wound that felt like it would define you forever and you realise that it has become something else entirely. It has become wisdom. It has become a way of understanding others.

This is where listening becomes transformation. This is where you hear God’s voice not in a whisper or a sign, but in the person you have become since you wrote those letters.

Most of us think of hearing God as receiving something external. We expect a message, a revelation, a moment of clarity that comes from outside ourselves. There is another kind of listening that happens inside. There is the listening that happens when you notice how God has been working in you the whole time. How your letters have been conversations with Him about who you are becoming. How your questions have been seeds, your crying out has been growth.

When you read your old letters and realise you have transformed, that is God speaking. That is God saying, “I heard every word. I held every tear. And I have been changing you all along.”

The Transformation is the Answer

Here is what we often miss about God’s voice in our letters: sometimes the answer is not a word. Sometimes the answer is the person you become because you dared to write the letter in the first place.

When you write a letter to God, you are not just asking Him a question. You are stepping into a conversation that changes you. You are refusing to pretend. You are insisting that God meet you in your truth, not in a version of yourself that feels safe or acceptable.

And God does meet you. He meets you in your raw honesty. He meets you in your questions. He meets you in your doubt. meeting you there, He begins to transform you.

The woman who wrote that letter two years ago was asking the wrong questions, perhaps or asking the right questions in the wrong way. You might be asking the deepest questions but not yet ready to hear the answers. God was listening. Even when you wrote letter after letter, God was working. He was rewiring you from the inside and He was teaching you. He was making you more like Himself.

Now, when you read those old letters, you can see it. You can trace the line of growth from that desperate woman to the one you are now. This journey, that is God’s voice saying, “I heard you, I saw you and I stayed with you. Look at what I have made of you.”

The answer to most of our desperate questions is not words. It is presence and it is time. It is God’s stubborn refusal to leave us where we are. It is transformation.

The Scripture We Need

“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.”

2 Corinthians 3:18

A Reflection for Right Now

You are not the same person who wrote your first letters. Something has changed in you. Some wound has stopped bleeding a question has finally found not an answer. Your doubt has transformed into something that looks like faith.

This transformation is God’s voice. This is what He has been saying to you all along through every letter, every question, every desperate plea. He has been saying, “Trust the process. Trust the time. Trust that I am here, changing you.”

Journaling Reflection: Reading Backwards

This is the deepest listening. Pull out your oldest letters. Read them with the eyes of the person you have become.

Part One: The Letter You Wrote Then

Choose a letter from at least a year ago. Read it fully.

What was happening?

What were you afraid of?

What were you asking God?

Write down the central question or wound of that letter.

Part Two: Who You Were and Who You Are

Now, write about how you have changed since you wrote that letter. Not the small things. The deep things.

What has shifted in you?

What do you believe differently?

What can you do now that you could not do then?

How has this fear or wound or question changed?

Part Three: God’s Voice in Your Transformation

Here is the listening: what has God been saying to you through the transformation itself?

What is He telling you by the fact that you are different now?

What does your change reveal about His character, His faithfulness, His love?

Write about what you hear God saying through the person you have become.

Your Action: The Backwards Reading Ritual

This week, find one of your oldest letters or journal entries. Read it slowly. Then, write a new letter to yourself from the place you are now.

What do you want to tell the woman who wrote that letter?

What have you learned?

What do you understand now?

What would you want her to know about where she would be today?

Then, write one letter to God about the transformation. Thank Him for it.

Tell Him what you see when you look at how far you have come.

Tell Him what you understand now about how He listens and how He answers.

This is not about bragging or false confidence. This is about seeing yourself with the eyes of God, recognising the work He has done in you, hearing His voice say, “I have never stopped listening. I have never stopped loving. Look at what we have created together.”

A Closing Prayer

God who transforms through time and presence, I am beginning to understand that some of your greatest answers are not in words. They are in the person I am becoming. They are in the ways I have changed since I first wrote out my desperate questions.

Help me to see my own transformation as your voice speaking to me. Help me to recognise that every shift in my heart, every loosening of my fear, every deepening of my faith is you speaking louder than words ever could.

Help me to look backwards at the person I was and see not failure, but journey. Not wasted time, a sacred ground where you have been working all along.

Give me eyes to see the changes in myself that I take for granted. Give me a heart to celebrate the ways I have grown. Give me the wisdom to understand that my transformation is your answer to my prayers.

Help me to hear, in the deepest part of myself, that you have been listening all along. That you are still listening. That you will keep listening and keep changing me until I become who you always knew I could be.

In gratitude for the person I am becoming, Amen.

Listening to God through letters has taken us from the pause, to the patterns, to the transformation. But the journey of listening is never finished. God’s voice continues to speak across your whole life, in every letter you write, in every silence you keep, in every change you notice. The conversation continues. Keep writing. Keep listening. Keep becoming.

With grace, Debbera
