A 10 minute practice for faith and stillness
Does your mind ever feel full?
Does it feel so noisy that you can’t hear the quiet whisper of God?
We long for that still, small voice. But the weight of our to-do lists drowns it out. The chatter of the world drowns it out.
We feel guilty for not having time. We feel guilty that our prayers feel scattered. We feel guilty that we are unfocused.
Connection, Not Study
But consider this.
What if connecting with God wasn’t about finding an empty hour? What if it was about creating a sacred, intentional ten minutes?
Your journal can be more than a diary. It can be a sanctuary.
It can be the quiet room where you sit with His word. You let it settle in your heart.
This practice isn’t about deep theological study. It is about connection.
A 10-Minute Practice
Here is a simple, 10-minute journaling practice. It will help you find that “peace of God, which transcends all understanding.”
1. The Stillness (1 Minute)
Before you open your Bible. Before you open your journal.
Simply sit. Close your eyes.
Take one deep breath. As you exhale, release the rush.
Offer a simple prayer: “Lord, quiet my heart. Help me to hear You.”
2. The Word (3 Minutes)
Choose a small piece of scripture. Don’t try to read a whole chapter.
You are not studying. You are listening.
Perhaps start with a verse that offers peace:
- “Be still and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
- “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
- “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
Read the verse slowly. Read it three times. Let the words wash over you.
3. The Reflection (5 Minutes)
Now, open your journal. Simply start writing. This is your quiet conversation.
Use one of these prompts, or just write whatever is on your heart:
- Write the verse: Just the act of writing it in your own hand can slow you down. It helps you see it in a new light.
- Pull out one word: What one word from the verse stands out to you right now? (e.g., “Rest.” “Still.” “Grace.”). Write it down. Explore why your heart might need that word today.
- Ask a quiet question: “Lord, where do I need your rest in my life today?” or “What does it look like to ‘be still’ in my busy afternoon?”
- Write a prayer: Turn the verse into a prayer. “Lord, thank you for your grace. Help me to feel its sufficiency today. Especially when I feel weak.”
4. The Anchor (1 Minute)
When your time is up, read over what you wrote.
Close your journal. Take one more deep breath.
Say a simple “Amen.”
A Sacred Space
You have anchored your heart.
You have created a small, sacred space for faith. You found stillness right in the middle of your real, busy life.
And that is a powerful, beautiful thing.
With love, Debbera
