We are standing at the edge of a new year.
It is so easy to look forward with fear. We look back at the year we’ve just had.
Our inner critic takes over. It sees “failures.” It sees “unanswered prayers.”
Our feelings are loud. They tell us: “You’re stuck.” “God has been silent.”
The Weapon of Remembrance
This is when our faith journal becomes our most powerful weapon.
It becomes our “Ebenezer.”
In 1 Samuel 7, the people had faced a long, hard season. There was fear. There was battle.
After the victory, the prophet Samuel set up a large stone.
He named it “Ebenezer” (the “Stone of Help”). He said: “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
It was a physical reminder. It was a visible reminder. It was proof.
It was an anchor for their memory. They could hold onto it when their feelings of fear came back.
Your Journal as Evidence
Your journal can be your Ebenezer.
It is the place where you intentionally log the “evidence.” You track God’s faithfulness.
When the uncertainty rolls in. When the fear comes back.
You can turn to a page. You can preach truth to your own heart.
your prompts
Prompts for Your “Ebenezer” Log
Use your journal to gather the stones.
- The “Thus Far” Look-Back: “Looking back at this past year, what was one impossible moment that God brought me through?”
- The “Manna” Evidence: “What is one small, specific prayer He did answer? (A car-parking space? A kind word from a friend? ‘Just enough’ money for the bill?)”
- The “Unseen Grace” Evidence: “Where did I see evidence of my own ‘unseen’ growth? (I was 1% kinder to myself. I didn’t ‘snap’ as quickly. I kept going.)”
- A Prayer of Remembrance: “Lord, my feelings are loud. But this proof is true. Thank you for your faithfulness. ‘Thus far, You have helped me.’”
your action points
Your Action Points: The “Ebenezer” Page
Build your monument.
- Turn to a fresh, blank page in your journal. (Maybe the very last page, so you always know where it is.)
- Title it: “MY EBENEZER: Thus Far He Has Helped Me.”
- Rule: This page is not for your “spin.” It is only for your “evidence.”
- Action: Once a week, add one new line of “evidence” to this list.
The next time you are uncertain. The next time God feels silent.
Your only job is to read this page.
With love, Debbera
