Permission to be Weary
It is that time of the year.
The house is a mess. The lists are long. Your mind is all over the place. Your soul is just so tired.
You long for a deep, quiet connection with God.
But when you sit down, you just feel guilty. Guilty for being so weary. Guilty for being so distracted. Guilty for not being “better” at this.
The Qualification is Weariness
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28
I want to lead you straight to Matthew 11:28. Jesus says:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”
Read that again.
He doesn’t say, “Come to me, all you who are joyful.” He doesn’t say, “Come to me, all you who are perfect.” He doesn’t say, “Come to me, all you who have it all together.”
He invites the weary. He invites the burdened.
A Barrier or an Invitation?
Your exhaustion is not a barrier to His presence. It is your invitation.
Your uncertainty is not a failure you need to hide. It is the very reason He is extending His hand to you.
Right now.
He is offering not a new “to-do” list. He is offering one simple, beautiful gift: Rest.
You don’t have to “fix” your weariness before you come to Him. You just have to come.
A Reflection for a Weary Soul
Open your journal. Be honest.
- Acknowledge Your Weariness (No Guilt): “Lord, I am weary. The ‘burden’ that feels heaviest on my heart right now is…”
- Name the “Striving”: “Where have I been trying to ‘muscle through’ this weariness? Where have I tried to do it on my own, instead of bringing it to You?”
- Receive the Invitation: “What would it feel like to accept Your invitation for ‘rest’? Just for the next 5 minutes? What is one small, heavy thing I can set down at Your feet right now?”
Your Anchor: The Sacred Sit-Down
Today, your “quiet time” is not about doing. It is about stopping.
- Time. Sometime today, set a timer for 3 minutes.
- Sit. Sit in your “quiet corner.”
- Stop. Do not try to pray. Do not try to journal. Just sit.
- Breathe. Let your one, quiet, internal prayer be:
- “I am weary.”
- “I am here.”
- “Give me rest.”
You have just had a perfect quiet time.
