Finding What is Firm
Welcome back to our quiet journey.
In our last devotional, we gave ourselves permission to be weary. (Read Part 1 here).
But now. In that weariness. It is so easy to feel adrift.
You feel uncertain. The “spin” is loud. Your feelings are a chaotic, stormy sea.
You feel like your boat is being tossed around. You are desperate for something solid. You need something to hold onto.
Feelings vs. Faith
This is when our feelings and our faith feel like two different things.
We feel anxious. We feel like God is distant. We feel like we’re failing.
I want to lead you to one of the most powerful, steadying truths in all of Scripture.
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
Hebrews 6:19
Hebrews 6:19 says:
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
The Job of the Anchor
Consider the anchor.
An anchor is not a sail. It doesn’t change the weather. It doesn’t stop the storm.
An anchor’s only job is to hold the boat fast. It holds it to something unseen. It holds it to something unmoving.
It ensures the waves cannot drag you away.
Waves vs. Truth
Your feelings are the waves. They are real. But they are not the truth.
Our hope is not in our feelings. They change like the wind.
Our hope is our anchor. It is the firm, secure, unchanging, unseen character of God.
A Reflection for a Drifting Heart
Open your journal. Distinguish the wave from the anchor.
- Name the “Waves”: “What ‘waves’ (my feelings) are tossing me around today? (Anxiety? Impatience? Doubt? Fear?)”
- Name the “Anchor”: “My feelings are the waves. But what is my anchor? What is one firm, secure truth about God? What is true no matter what I feel? (He is faithful. He is with me. He is in control. His grace is sufficient.)”
- A Prayer of Trust: “Lord, I feel [name the wave]. But I am choosing to anchor my soul to the truth that You are [name the anchor]. Hold me steady.”
Your Anchor: The Ebenezer List
Today, your practice is to build your anchor.
We will create an “Ebenezer” List (our “Stone of Help”).
- Turn to a new page in your journal.
- Title it: “My Anchor: Thus Far He Has Helped Me.”
- Write. Write THREE specific times from your past when God was faithful.
- “That time the bill was paid.”
- “That time He healed my friend.”
- “That time He gave me peace when I felt uncertain.”
When your feelings get loud.
Read your list.

With grace, Debbera
