The Thief of Joy
Do you ever do that?
You are having a perfectly good day. It is quiet. You feel a measure of peace.
Then you pick up your phone.
In many ways, our phones are a lifeline. They connect us to our husbands. They connect us to our children. They connect us to our family work. We navigate conversations. We manage schedules.
But on top of it, we have social media. It clamors for our attention too.
The Flood of Inadequacy
You open a social media app. In the space of two minutes, you are flooded. You are floored.
The joy is sucked right out of you.
You see someone else’s highlight reel. You see their perfect home. You see their seamless career. You see their vibrant holiday. You see their flawless spiritual life.
Just like that, a cold, grey cloud rolls in.
Your own life felt so beautiful moments before. It felt like enough. Now it feels lacking. It feels small. It feels behind.
You lean into the lie: “I don’t have enough. I am not enough.”
The Trap of the “Highlight Reel”
I know this feeling. It is the sharp, hollow ache of comparison. It is exactly what they say it is: “The thief of joy.”
In a world that is so loud with “look at me,” it is the easiest trap to fall into.
We start to measure our own quiet, unseen faithfulness against someone else’s curated, public victory.
But here is the truth.
God’s path for you is not on their map.
He has prepared “good works… in advance for US to do”
ePHESIANS 2:10
He has a unique story. He has a beautiful story. He has a specific story He is writing with your life.
You cannot compare your sacred, behind-the-scenes chapter to someone else’s cover story.
Journaling Back to Truth
Your journal is the safe, holy space for this. It is where you turn down the world’s loud volume. It is where you tune your heart back to the loving whisper of your own, God-given story.
yOUR pROMPTS
Prompts for Reclaiming Your Story
Use these prompts to silence the noise.
- Acknowledge the Sting: “When I scrolled today, what was the one image that made me feel ‘less than’? What feeling did it bring up in me? (Be honest. Was it envy? Was it sadness? Was it inadequacy?)”
- Find the Deeper Longing: “Look kindly at that feeling. What is the TRUE desire underneath it? (for example, The envy of a beautiful home might be a longing for ‘peace’ or ‘sanctuary’ in my own.)”
- The “Unseen” Gratitude: “What is one quiet, unseen moment from my OWN life today that I can be thankful for? (for example, the 5 minutes of silence with my tea. A small kindness I shared. A problem I navigated.)”
- A Prayer of Refocus: “Lord, thank you for the unique path You have for me. Today, what is the one ‘good work’ You have prepared for ME to do? (It might be as simple as ‘be kind’ or ‘rest well.’)”
yOUR ACTION POINT
Your Action Point: A “Truth-First” Anchor
The pull of the scroll is strong. Your action is to create a “Truth-First Anchor.”
- Pause. Before you open a social media app, open your journal first (or a note on your phone).
- Write. Write one true, good thing about your own life. Write one thing about your identity in God.
- “I am held.”
- “My worth is not in my productivity.”
- “I am grateful for my quiet home.”
- Anchor. This simple, 30-second act anchors your heart in your own truth. Do this before you expose it to the world’s noise.
With grace, Debbera
