Dear Journaling Community,
The cold has settled in.
You can feel it in the mornings now. The way the sky stays dark a little longer. The way your body pulls the blanket tighter before the alarm even goes off. The way the world outside your window looks like it has gone quiet on purpose.
The world keeps moving. The emails keep coming. The responsibilities don’t hibernate. Somewhere in the back of your mind there is this voice that says you should be doing more. Getting up earlier. Being more productive. Pushing harder.
But your body is tired. Your heart is tired. That is maybe not a problem to fix. It might be a message to hear.
What if the tiredness is the teacher?
We live in a culture that celebrates hustle and fears rest. We admire the woman who does it all. We feel ashamed when we cannot.
But nature does not apologise for winter.
The trees do not panic when their leaves fall. The garden does not set a three-month goal to bloom by August. The earth just rests. Quietly. Unapologetically. Somewhere deep in the soil, things are happening that no one can see yet.
What if winter is not the absence of growth? What if it is the condition for it?
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.” Psalm 23:1-3
Notice that. He makes me lie down. Not suggests. Not recommends. He makes me.
Maybe the tiredness you feel is not weakness. Maybe it is the Shepherd laying you down because He knows what is coming next requires a rested soul.
This month, we are asking one question:
What if I let myself exhale?
Not a quick breath between responsibilities. A long, slow, winter exhale. The kind that mists the window of the car. The kind that your whole body sinks into.
Your Permission Slip
This month, you have permission to:
- Close the journal without writing a word
- Cancel something you said yes to out of guilt
- Go to bed at 8pm without apology
- Sit in the car for five minutes after you arrive home before going inside
- Let your quiet time be actually quiet: no book, no podcast, no prompt, just silence
Write one of these on a sticky note. Put it somewhere you will see it every morning. Or download this month’s printable permission slip and stick it on your mirror.

Your Journey This Month
Over the next four weeks, we will walk through The Long Exhale together. Each Tuesday, a new reflection and prompt will arrive here on the blog. You do not need to do them all. You do not need to do them in order. Pick the one that meets you where you are. That is enough.
Week 1: The Honest Inventory Before we can rest, we need to see what we are carrying. This week, we map the weight. Every obligation, every worry, every invisible load is laid out on one page. Not to fix. To see.
Week 2: The 3AM Check-In This is the week for the woman who lies awake. The one whose mind races when the house is still. We keep our journal by the bed and learn what one sentence written in the dark can teach us about ourselves.
Week 3: The Art of Doing Less We always write to-do lists. This week, we write a to-stop list. The revolutionary, guilt-defying, Psalm-23 act of subtracting instead of adding.
Week 4: The Winter Table We set a table in our journals for the things that will carry us through winter. Not goals. Not tasks. The sound of rain. The prayer at 3am. The blanket that feels like a hug. Everything you need is already at your table.
Your Daily Exhale (Habit Tracker)
This month, we are not tracking productivity. We are not tracking water intake or steps or quiet time streaks.
We are tracking rest. Real rest.
Not sleep. Not sitting on the couch scrolling your phone. Rest that your body actually registers as rest.

Your daily practice: Once a day, for at least 5 minutes do something that requires nothing from you. Sit in the car in silence. Stand outside and feel the cold air. Close your eyes at your desk. Hold your tea with both hands and drink it slowly. Lie on the floor seriously just lie on the floor and stare at the ceiling.
Five minutes. That is all.
How to track: Draw 30 small circles in your journal (one for each day of June). Colour in a circle for each day you gave yourself 5 minutes of real rest. At the end of the month, look at all your circles. That is a month of exhaling made visible.
Your Small Challenge: The Kettle Pause
Every time you boil the kettle this month and you will boil it many times because it is winter, stand still do not walk away. Do not check your phone. Just stand and listen to the water heat.
While you wait, breathe, whisper:
“God, I am here. You are here. That is enough for right now.”
The kettle takes about two minutes. That is two minutes of presence you did not have to schedule. Two minutes of prayer you did not have to plan. Two minutes of winter stillness that nobody can take from you.
If you have our Kettle Prayer Cards, pull one out and read it while the water boils. If you do not have them, that one line is enough. It has always been enough.
A Closing Prayer
God of winter, God of long nights and slow mornings, meet me here. Not in the season of producing. Not in the season of performing. In the season of exhaling.
I am tired, Lord. Not the kind that sleep fixes. The deep kind. The kind that makes me wonder if I am allowed to stop.
So I am asking, am I allowed to stop?
I think I already know the answer. I think You have been whispering it for weeks. Rest. Rest. Rest.
Help me listen. Help me lie down. Help me trust that the world will not fall apart if I close my eyes. If it does, help me trust that You are holding it anyway.
Amen.
