it’s 3am again
It happens without warning.
That soft pull from the depths of sleep suddenly, your eyes are open. You turn to look at the clock and yes, it is exactly 3am.
At first, it feels a little eerie. Everything is quiet. The only thing you hear is the white noise of the night or the distant hum of a car on the highway.
You lie there asking yourself,
“Why me? It’s so comfy in bed. Why am I awake now without rhyme or reason?”
We usually label this as insomnia, stress, or just bad luck. But I’ve slowly begun to wonder, in my own journey of faith:
- What if this isn’t an interruption?
- What if it’s an invitation?
What if, in the one hour of the day when the world finally stops talking, God is quietly trying to get a word in?
The Holiness of the Night Watch
Don’t you find there is a unique holiness to those pre-dawn hours?
During the day we wear so many hats, parents, employees, friends, partners. Our minds are filled with plans and to-do lists. We are so busy doing that we forget to actually do some listening.
Yet, at 3am, we are simply ourselves. We have nothing to do. There are no tasks to complete at that moment. We are stripped of our roles.
It’s in these moments of utter vulnerability if we open ourselves enough, we might hear something we’d otherwise miss.
God’s Word is filled with people meeting Him in the quiet.
Think of David considering the heavens in the “night watch,” or Jesus Himself rising long before dawn to find a lonely place to pray. Perhaps this hour is a sacred inheritance, a time hardwired into our spirits for a deeper kind of connection.
Why Does He Whisper Then?
If this soft stir is indeed a divine nudge, why then? Why not at lunch?
Perhaps this is the only time He has our undivided attention.
- He does not have to compete with the world’s noise.
- He does not have to shout to be heard.
- He does not have to wait for you to check your phone.
It is a call to surrender. Sometimes, He wakes us when our subconscious worries feel so immense that we don’t know what to do. He wakes us to remind us that He is there and that we don’t have to carry the burden alone into the morning light.
Or perhaps it’s a moment of quiet inspiration to a solution of a problem we’ve had, or a word of comfort that can only be received when our logical, busy brain is soft and sleepy.
Moving from Frustration to Listening
Instead of fighting those 3am moments, I’ve learned to embrace them.
I take those moments to slip out of bed, grab my pen and write in my journal. I pour out all the thoughts floating in my mind. It becomes a “letting go” moment. It’s a sacred space where I can stop talking and start listening for a response.
Journaling Prompts for a 3am Conversation
If you find yourself awake in the stillness tonight, see it not as a problem to be solved, but as a quiet appointment to be kept.
Here are a few soft prompts to bring to the page:
- The Surface: In the silence of this moment, the first thoughts and feelings that surface are…
- The Handover: If I could hand one worry over to the stillness of this night for God to hold for me, it would be…
- The Whisper: In this profound quiet, the soft truth I think my soul needs to hear is…
- The Hope: What is one prayer I can hold for the coming morning light?
You Are Not Broken
You are not strange for waking. You are not broken. You may simply be receptive to a quiet call.
May your next 3am visit be met not with frustration, but with a soft and curious heart, ready to listen.
With grace, Debbera
