IT’S 3AM
So, you are awake.
The world is hushed and the clock confirms it is about 3am.
Instead of frustration, let’s reframe this. This is not an interruption; it is a quiet appointment. You don’t need to solve anything right now. You just need to show up.
Here is a soft, step-by-step ritual to help you navigate the night watch.
1. The Soft Surrender
Before you move, simply lie still. Notice the quiet.
Instead of fighting for sleep, take one slow, deep breath and let it go. Acknowledge the moment by whispering, either in your heart or into the room:
“I’m here. I’m awake. Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.”
Feel how this simple act turns the tension of “Why am I awake?” into the openness of “Yes.”
2. The Silent Inquiry
As you lie there, let one careful, curious question float into your mind. Don’t let your thoughts race to tomorrow’s to-do list. Just choose one soft inquiry:
- “Father, what do you want to show me in this stillness?”
- “What part of my heart needs tender attention right in this moment?”
3. The Sanctuary of Your Journal
If you feel called, quietly slip out of bed.
Keep the lights low. Perhaps make a warm drink (chamomile or rooibos). Bring your journal back to your quiet corner.
Remember, this page is a safe and quiet place. It is ready to hold whatever you bring, without judgment.
4. The Conversation (Writing It Out)
Open your journal. There are no rules here. You are not writing to find an answer, only to listen and release. Let your pen be the bridge between your heart and the page.
Try one of these approaches:
- The Observation: Simply describe the feeling that woke you. Is it anxiety? Excitement? A heaviness in your chest? Name it.
- The Handover: List the first “worry” that is looping in your mind. See it as you write it down. Feel the release as you physically place it on the paper, handing it over to God’s care.
- The Longing: Explore what your soul is truly hungry for in this stillness—is it peace? Clarity? Rest?
- The Anchor: You might even just write one verse over and over, like a meditation: “Be still and know that I am God.”
5. The Final Release
When the thoughts have quieted and your heart feels a little lighter, your part is done.
You don’t need to have found a solution to your problems. You only needed to listen.
Close your journal. Place your hand on the cover and say a small prayer of thanks.
“Thank you for this quiet space. Thank you for holding this for me.”
Return to Rest
Trust that you have been heard. Now, return to your bed.
You are not broken for waking. You have simply attended a sacred, quiet conversation. May you return to sleep held, heard and in peace.
Happy Journaling, Debbera
