Journaling Through Past Regrets and Future Fears

Journaling Through Past Regrets and Future Fears

The Gift of “Just Today”

Does your mind ever feel like a time traveler?

In a single moment, it can rocket you into the future, spinning “what if” scenarios that fill your chest with anxiety. And just as quickly, it can pull you back into the past, replaying a conversation, a mistake, or a hurt on a loop, filling you with the heavy weight of regret.

Here you are, trying to simply be in your own life, but your heart is caught somewhere between yesterday and tomorrow.

I know this feeling so well. It’s exhausting. And in these moments, our prayers can feel frantic begging for a different past or a guaranteed future.

But God, in His tender wisdom, consistently invites us into one, single place: Today.

Grace is Daily Manna

God gave the Israelites manna for just one day. If they tried to hoard it for tomorrow, it spoiled.

Jesus taught us to pray for today’s bread and reminded us not to worry about tomorrow,

“for tomorrow will worry about itself”

mATTHEW 6:34

Grace is not a savings account; it’s a fresh, daily provision.

His presence is not found in yesterday’s regrets or tomorrow’s fears. His presence is here. Now.

Your Journal as an Anchor

Your journal is the most powerful tool you have to practice this holy return to the present.

Think of it as an anchor. It’s a quiet space to acknowledge the ghosts of yesterday and the worries for tomorrow, and then carefully set them down so you can receive the gift of right now.

Prompts for a Present Heart

If your mind is traveling through time today, use these prompts to bring it back home.

1. Releasing Yesterday (The Past)

“What one regret or ‘should have’ from the past is feeling heavy on my heart today? I am placing it here on the page, asking for grace to release it, just for this moment.”

2. Surrendering Tomorrow (The Future)

“What is my biggest ‘what if’ about the future? I am naming it here, and quietly handing it over to God, trusting that His grace will be sufficient for me WHEN that day comes.”

3. Finding God in the ‘Now’ (The Present)

“In this exact, quiet moment, what is one simple sign of God’s presence I can see, hear, or feel? (e.g., the light on the floor, the sound of my own breath, the warmth of my tea).”

4. Receiving Today’s Manna (The Provision)

“Lord, what is the one thing I truly need from You for just today? (Is it patience? Peace? A moment of rest?)”

Your Action Point: A 5-Minute “Anchor”

Tonight, before you go to sleep, or tomorrow when you wake, set a timer for just five minutes.

  1. Open your journal.
  2. Choose one prompt from above.
  3. Write whatever comes.
  4. Close your journal when the timer goes off and say this simple prayer:“Thank you for today’s grace. It is enough.”

This simple act anchors your heart back to the present, the only place where life is actually happening.

With care, Debbera
