Finding the Quiet Joy
Have you ever been in a difficult, heavy season and someone cheerfully says, “Just be grateful! Count your blessings!”
You want to scream.
You know gratitude is important. You want to feel it. But in this moment, it just feels fake.
It feels like you’re being asked to put a shiny, positive sticker on top of a deep, real hurt and your soul knows the difference.
Redefining Gratitude
What if “gratitude” doesn’t always have to be a loud, joyful celebration?
What if it’s not about big, shiny blessings, but about quiet noticing?
I’ve learned that in the hardest seasons, gratitude is not a feeling; it is a practice.
It is the intentional act of training your eyes to find the small, quiet whispers of God’s grace that are still present, even in the storm.
It’s the Manna, Not the Feast
Think of it as “manna” for today. It’s not the whole feast, but it is enough.
It is the warmth of your socks. It is the one good cup of coffee. It is the five minutes of silence before the house wakes up.
This isn’t toxic positivity. This is quiet, resilient joy.
It’s the practice of
“Give thanks IN all circumstances”
1 Thessalonians 5:18
not FOR them, but IN them
It’s the holy act of finding God’s hand, still holding yours, right in the middle of the mess. Your journal is the perfect place to start this tender practice of “noticing.”

Prompts for Noticing Quiet Joy
When the sky is gray, use your journal to find the small sparks of light.
- Sensory Grace: “What is one small, physical comfort I can feel right now? (for example the softness of my blanket, the warmth of my cup, the light in the room). I will just sit with that one thing and say thank you.”
- The Hidden Manna: “What was one small, ‘ordinary’ moment from today that was not terrible? (for example a short walk, a text from a friend, a song I heard, a moment of peace).”
- A Thank You for the Sustaining: “This season is hard. But what is one way I have been sustained today? How has God kept me going, even when I felt weak?”
- A Simple List: “Today, I am quietly grateful for…” (List 3 things, no matter how tiny. “My pillow.” “My cat.” “This pen.”)

Your Action Point: A 3-Minute “Joy Scan”
Tonight, just before you close your eyes, open your journal.
- Set a timer for three minutes.
- Your only task is to “scan” your day and find one quiet, good-enough thing. One moment of grace.
- Write it down. It could be as simple as, “The rain on the roof” or “The soup I had for lunch was warm.”
This tiny, consistent act slowly trains your heart to find the light, even in the shadows.
With care, Debbera
