The Anchor Prayer

The Anchor Prayer

How to hold steady when your mind spins

Can you feel it?

That “spinning” feeling in your mind.

The world is spinning with to-do lists. Our hearts are spinning right along with it.

We feel anxious. We feel unmoored. We feel adrift in a sea of “shoulds.” We are drowning in “hurry.”

The Impossible Prayer

When our minds are this loud. Our prayers can feel impossible.

We sit down for a “quiet time.” But all we hear is the spin.

In these moments, we don’t need a long, eloquent prayer.

We need an anchor.

The Spiritual SOS

An “Anchor Prayer” is a short, simple, powerful prayer. It is something you hold onto in the middle of a storm.

It is your “SOS” to God.

It is the spiritual equivalent of dropping a heavy, steadying weight. It stops your soul from “drifting” away on the waves of overwhelm.

The Bible gives us this beautiful promise:

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” (Hebrews 6:19).

hEBREWS 6:19

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” (Hebrews 6:19).

Your Anchor Prayer is you. You are choosing to hold onto that hope. You are doing it right in the middle of the chaos.

Journaling Prompts to Find Your “Anchor”

Use your journal to find the weight you need.

  • Name the “Spin”: “When my mind is ‘spinning,’ what is the main thought? What is the main feeling? (I’m behind? I’m not enough? I’m overwhelmed?)”
  • Name the “Storm”: “What is the one situation in my life right now? What makes me feel most ‘adrift’? What makes me feel ‘unmoored’?”
  • The “Anchor” I Need: “When I feel this way, what does my soul truly need? (Peace? Grace? Stillness? Help? Strength?)”
  • A Prayer of Hope: “Lord, I feel I am ‘adrift.’ I ask You to be my anchor. Hold my heart steady today.”

yOUR ACTION POINT

Your Action Points: The “Notice”

We cannot fix what we do not feel.

  1. Notice. Your only action today is to notice your “spin.”
  2. Pause. The next time you feel that “hurried, anxious, spinning” feeling start, just stop.
  3. Name it. In your heart, just say:
    • “Ah. This is the spin.”
    • “I need an anchor.”

This simple act of “noticing” is the first step. It is the most powerful step to finding your peace.

(In our next post, we will create your own, personal Anchor Prayer to use in these very moments.)

With care, Debbera
