The Sacred Slow-Down
Do you ever read your Bible, close the cover, and realize… you don’t remember a single word you just read?
You checked the box. You did the “right thing.” But your eyes just scanned the page while your mind was planning dinner or worrying about that email.
It feels dry. It feels like a chore. And you wonder, “Why am I not ‘getting’ anything out of this?”
I want to introduce you to a way of reading that changes everything. It’s called Inductive Bible Study.
Now, please don’t let that big, academic word scare you away. “Inductive” simply means starting with the details.
Most of us read “deductively.” We come to the text with our own ideas, feelings, and questions (like “What does this say about me?”) already in our heads. We look for confirmation of what we already think.
Turning Reading into a Conversation
Inductive study is a Sacred Slow-Down.
It invites us to stop, put down our own baggage, and just look at the text first. It’s the difference between skimming a friend’s text message while you’re driving, versus sitting down with them for a long, quiet coffee and truly listening to every word they say.
It turns Bible reading from a “to-do” list item into a quiet conversation.
Step One: The “Notice” Prompt
You don’t need a workbook or a theology degree. You just need your journal and a willingness to slow down.
Today, we start with the first and most important step: Observation.
- Pick a small passage: Try something familiar, like Psalm 23:1-3 or Matthew 11:28-30.
- Read it slowly: Read it once. Then read it again.
- The Prompt: Ask yourself: “If I wasn’t looking for a ‘lesson’ or an ‘answer,’ what would I just notice? What words are repeated? What emotions are here? Who is speaking?”
- Write it down: Just list the details. Like you are describing a painting.
Your Action Point: The “No-Application” Day
We are often in such a rush to “fix” ourselves that we skip the “seeing” part. So, here is a challenge for you.
Today, give yourself permission NOT to apply the Bible to your life.
Your only job is to observe it.
- Read 3 verses.
- Write down 3 things you see (for example, “I see the word ‘Shepherd.’ I see the word ‘Green.’ I see that the water is ‘still.'”).
- Close your Bible.
That’s it. You have honored the Word by truly seeing it. The application will come later; for today, just enjoy the view.
With grace, Debbera
