The One Verse Anchor
In our last post, we gave ourselves a “permission slip.” (Read it here).
We agreed that our journal is a holding space. It is not a performance.
So, we’re sitting with our journal. We feel a little braver.
But the next question hits us.
“Okay… but what do I write?”
We feel the pressure. We think we must read an entire chapter. We think we must write a profound essay. We think we must have a life-changing revelation in ten minutes.
It is overwhelming. So we do nothing.
A Lamp, Not a Floodlight
I want to offer you a simpler path. The “One-Verse” Anchor.
You don’t need to understand a whole chapter. You just need one verse.
“yOUR WORD IS A LAMP FOR MY FEET, A LIGHT FOR MY PATH”
pSALM 119:105
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
A lamp is not a floodlight. It doesn’t show you the whole journey.
It just shows you the very next step.
Your “one-verse” is your lamp for the day. It is your anchor. This is a quiet, profound way to start a practice.
The “One-Verse” Anchor Practice
Here is your 3-step guide.
- 1. The “Listen” (Find Your Verse): “Open your Bible. Open a Bible app. Read until one small phrase seems to ‘shimmer’ or ‘whisper’ to your heart. Don’t overthink it. It could be as simple as, ‘He gives me rest.’”
- 2. The “Reflection” (Write it Down): “Write that one verse at the top of your page. Now, reflect. What does this one phrase mean to me? What does it mean for my life today?”
- 3. The “Response” (The Prayer): “Write a simple, one-sentence prayer back to God. (e.g., Lord, thank you for the gift of rest. Please help me accept it today. Even for just 5 minutes.)”
Your Action Point: Your “One-Verse” Hunt
Keep it small. Keep it doable.
- Hunt. Tomorrow morning, your only goal is to find your “one-verse.”
- Read. Read until you find it. It might take 30 seconds. It might take 10 minutes.
- Sticky Note. Write it on a sticky note.
- Place. Put that sticky note in your journal. Put it on your mirror. Put it on your car dashboard.
Let that one verse be your “lamp” for the whole day.
You have just had a beautiful, complete faith journaling moment.
(In our next post, I’ll share how to have a “faith journal” even when you truly have no time—like in the middle of a chaotic day).
With grace, Debbera
