The Lamp not the Map
Do you ever wish God would just give you the whole map?
We look forward to the future. It might be the next month. It might be the next year. It might be a new season of life.
We want to see the destination. We want to know exactly how it will work out. We want to know where the turns are. We want to know that we will be safe.
We crave certainty.
The Paralysis of the Unknown
When we don’t get it, we freeze.
We stand paralyzed at the edge of the unknown. We are afraid to take a step because we can’t see the staircase.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
pSALM 119:105
I want to remind you of a beautiful image from Psalm 119:105:
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Psalm 119:105
Floodlights vs. Lamps
In the ancient world, a lamp wasn’t a giant floodlight. It didn’t illuminate the whole valley.
It was a small, flickering flame. It gave off just enough light to see one step ahead.
God rarely gives us the map. He gives us the lamp.
Why?
Because if we had the map, we would trust the plan. When we only have a lamp, we have to trust the Guide.
Looking forward doesn’t require you to figure it all out. It just requires you to be brave enough. Take the one next step that is lit up. Trust Him with the rest.

Prompts for the Next Step
Use your journal to dim the floodlights and find the lamp.
- Name the Dark: “When I look forward, what is the ‘unknown’ area? What makes me feel most anxious? (My career? My child’s future? My health?)”
- Release the Map: “I am trying to figure out steps 2 through 10. But I am releasing the need to know the ending.”
- Find the Lamp: “What is the one, clear, small step God has lit up for me right now? (Send that one email. Rest for today. Be faithful in this one task.)”
- A Prayer of Trust: “Lord, I don’t need to see the whole staircase. I trust You with the dark. Help me to just take this one, lit-up step.”
yOUR ACTION POINTS
Your Action Points: The “Next Right Thing”
When you feel overwhelmed by the big picture, stop.
- Ask yourself one question: “What is the next right thing?”
- Make it tiny.
- “Drink water.”
- “Open the laptop.”
- “Say a prayer.”
- Do it.
- Ask again.
This is how we walk by faith. One lamp-lit step at a time.
With grace, Debbera
