Have you ever felt like your dreams were just floating around in your head, waiting to be captured? A Vision Board Journal is a powerful, creative and deeply personal way to bring those dreams to life. Unlike a traditional vision board, a journal allows you to reflect, evolve and grow with your goals over time.
In this mini- workshop we will guide you through creating a powerful vision board and accompanying journal practice. It’s more than pretty pictures, it’s about setting your intentions, connecting with your desires and actively co-creating the life you want. Let’s dive in!
WHAT IS A VISION BOARD JOURNAL?
A Vision Board Journal combines the visual inspiration of a vision board with the reflective power of journaling. It’s a space where you can:
- Visualize your goals with images, quotes and drawings
- Write about your dreams, progress and mindset
- Revisit and revise your vision as you grow
What You’ll Need
- A blank journal or notebook (preferably one you love!) This will be your vision journal.
- A larger piece of poster board, or a dedicated section in your journal for the main vision board spread(s)
- Magazines, printed images, stickers, washi tape, old books (for images, words, textures)
- Pens, markers, glue, scissors
- Optional: digital tools like Canva or Pinterest for inspiration
- A quiet space and dedicated time (at least 1 -2 hours to start)
STEP BY STEP GUIDE – LAYING THE FOUNDATION – Intention and Themes
Step 1: Set Your Intentions (The Why and What)
Before you start cutting and pasting, you need to connect with your inner self : It’s about reflecting on the why and what …..
Workshop Activity:
- Find a comfortable seat, take a few deep breaths and quiet your mind.
- In your journal, answer these questions with honesty and openness:
- “What do I want to feel more of in my daily life this year? (e.g., joy, peace, excitement, connection, calm, abundance, strength)”
- “If I were living my most aligned life one year from now, what would be different?”
- “What areas of my life (e.g., career, relationships, health, personal growth, finances, environment, fun/recreation) are calling for more attention or a positive shift?”
- “What dreams or desires have I been putting off, perhaps due to fear or self-doubt?”
- “What limiting beliefs or patterns am I ready to release?”
More Examples of Intentions:
- “This year, I intend to cultivate deep self-compassion and prioritize my well-being.”
- “My intention is to feel financially secure and empowered, making conscious choices with my money.”
- “I want to foster meaningful connections with loved ones and build a supportive community.”
- “I intend to step out of my comfort zone regularly and embrace new learning opportunities.”
- “My focus is on creating a harmonious and inspiring home environment.”
Step 2: Choose Your Core Themes (Your focus areas)
Now, let’s distill those intentions into 3-5 core themes. This helps prevent overwhelm and gives your vision board focus. Pick 3–5 themes that matter most to you. These could be:
- Health & Wellness
- Career & Finances
- Relationships
- Creativity & Hobbies
- Travel & Adventure
- Personal Growth
Workshop Activity:
- Looking at your answers from Step 1, identify recurring ideas or the most potent desires.
- Group them into broader categories if needed.
- Select 3-5 themes that feel most important to you right now. Remember, these can evolve!
- Write these themes boldly in your journal.
More Examples of Themes:
Tip: You can combine concepts: “Abundant Well-being” (Health & Finances), “Creative Entrepreneurship” (Career & Creativity).
“My themes are: Self-love, Financial Freedom and Artistic Expression.” or you can divide them into
“Vibrant Health, Career Advancement, Joyful Relationships.”
“Spiritual Growth, Peaceful Home, Learning & Exploration.”
“Courageous Action, Creative Flow, Community Connection, Mindful Living.”
BRINGING YOUR VISION TO LIFE – Gather your Visuals for Creation

Step 3: Gather Your Visuals (the inspiration hunt)
This is the fun, intuitive part! Let your chosen themes guide you as you search for visuals. Flip through magazines or search online for images, quotes and symbols that resonate with your themes. Don’t overthink—go with what sparks joy or motivation.
Workshop Activity:
- Flip through magazines, browse Pinterest, Google Images, Unsplash, or even look through your own photos.
- Look for images, words, quotes, colors, textures and symbols that resonate with your intentions and themes.
- Don’t overthink it! If something sparks joy, curiosity, or a feeling of “yes!” – cut it out or save it. You can always decide not to use it later.
- Aim for a variety of visuals – people, places, objects, abstract designs, powerful words.
More Examples of Visuals:
“Health & Wellness”: Fresh fruits and vegetables, someone exercising happily, a glass of water, running shoes, the words “Vitality,” “Nourish,” “Strong.”
“Self-Love”: A serene face, a blooming flower, a cozy bathtub, a person meditating, the words “Worthy,” “Enough,” “Radiant.”
“Financial Freedom”: Images of currency (tastefully!), someone working joyfully in their ideal environment, a graph trending upwards, a piggy bank, the words “Abundance,” “Prosperity,” “Debt-Free.”
“Artistic Expression”: Art supplies, someone painting/dancing/writing, a vibrant abstract image, musical notes, a stage, the words “Create,” “Flow,” “Inspired.”
“Travel & Adventure”: Maps, passport stamps, specific destinations, hiking boots, a plane, the words “Explore,” “Wanderlust,” “Discover.”
Step 4: Create Your First Vision Spread (The Visual Blueprint)
Open to a fresh page and start crafting your first vision board spread. Arrange your visuals, add doodles and write affirmations or goals alongside them. This is where your board starts to take shape! Take your main vision board surface (poster board or a dedicated journal spread).
Begin arranging your chosen visuals. Play around with the layout before gluing anything down.
You might group images by theme, or let them flow more organically. There’s no right or wrong way!
Once you’re happy, glue everything in place.
Feel free to add doodles, hand-written affirmations, your theme words, or inspiring quotes directly onto the board.
More Examples of Affirmations/Goals on the Board:
Tip: Your first spread can be a general overview, or you might decide to create a focused spread for each theme over time. For this workshop, let’s start with one main spread.
Next to an image of a healthy meal: “I nourish my body with vibrant, wholesome foods.”
Under a picture representing your dream job: “I am confidently pursuing work that aligns with my passion and purpose.”
Surrounding a symbol of peace: “I cultivate inner peace and calm in my daily life.”
DEEPENING THE CONNECTION – Journaling and Action

Step 5: Journal Your Vision (The Heart & Soul)
On the next page, write about why these goals matter to you. Reflect on what achieving them would feel like and what small steps you can take. Your vision board is the “what” your journal is the “why” and “how”.
Workshop Activity:
Turn to a new page in your journal, next to or following a photo of your vision board spread if you like.
Title it based on your vision board (e.g., “My Vision,” “Stepping Into My Power”). Use the following prompts to explore your vision more deeply:
- “Looking at my vision board, what emotions come up for me? Describe them.”
- “For each theme, why is this deeply important to me? What core values does it connect with?”
- “What does success look like for me in this area? (Be specific: How will I feel? What will I be doing? What will be different?)”
- “If I fully embodied this vision, what would my typical day/week look like?”
- “What small, tangible steps can I take this week or this month to move closer to one of these visions?”
- “What potential obstacles or fears might arise and how can I prepare to navigate them?”
Theme: “Creative Entrepreneurship” – one example of what a journal entry can look like
“Seeing the images of a thriving online shop and happy customers makes me feel excited and a little nervous! This is important because I crave autonomy and want to share my unique gifts. Success here looks like consistently making sales, receiving positive feedback and feeling creatively fulfilled every day. A small step this week is to research e-commerce platforms for 1 hour. A fear is that no one will like my products, but I can navigate this by focusing on creating for myself first and finding my niche audience.
LIVING YOUR VISION – ONGOING PRACTICE
Step 6: Revisit & Reflect Monthly – (The Check in and Evolution)
Your vision board and journal are living documents, not static objects. Set a reminder to revisit your journal each month. Add new pages, reflect on progress and adjust your vision as needed.
Workshop Activity (to be done monthly):
- Set a recurring reminder in your calendar (e.g., first Sunday of the month) for a “Vision Check-In.”
- During this time:
- Spend a few minutes looking at your vision board. How does it make you feel now?
- In your journal, reflect on the past month:
- “What progress (big or small) did I make towards any of my visions?”
- “What am I most proud of?”
- “What challenges did I encounter?”
- “What did I learn about myself or my goals?”
- “Are my themes and visuals still resonating? Is there anything I want to add, change, or let go of?”
- “What are my key intentions or small steps for the upcoming month?”
- Feel free to add new images to your board, create new journal spreads for specific goals, or even start a new board if your vision significantly shifts.
More Examples of Monthly Reflections:
“My ‘Career Advancement’ theme feels a bit stale. My priorities have shifted. I’m going to journal more on what truly excites me professionally before adjusting my board.”
“This month, I made progress on ‘Vibrant Health’ by trying three new healthy recipes. I feel more energized! However, I neglected my ‘Joyful Relationships’ theme. Next month, I’ll schedule two coffee dates.”
“I launched my blog for ‘Artistic Expression’! It was scary, but I did it. My fear of judgment was less than I expected. I realized my definition of ‘Financial Freedom’ needs to include more about giving back, so I’ll add a visual for that.”
Tips for Staying Inspired
- Keep your journal visible—on your nightstand or desk
- Use color and texture to make it fun and engaging
- Pair it with a morning or evening routine
- Share your journey with a friend or accountability partner
